at least it's keeping me awake

I am reading this  book right now called "The Twilight of Common Dreams" by Todd Gitlin for one of the papers I am writing.  My professor recommended I use it.  However, Gitlin has such a jarringly biased tone that is almost hard for me to read.  Among some of his remarks (the ones I could find going back): 

"There is also the disconcerting question of how much academic success the American economy could actually abide.  If all African-American youth in Oakland graduated from high school with a B-average or better, would there be jobs for them anywhere but McDonald's?"  *goes on to argue there isn't room for them in colleges anyway*  Okay, you got me, we shouldn't try so hard to educate them then...

"Blacks feeling disrespected by whites, gays feeling embattled by straights (and AIDS), the handicapped feeling unfairly treated by able-bodied - all feel they have been silent too long while their people suffer."

There was another really nasty comment about the Left that I can't find.  Someone had even written "ouch!" in the margin... why can't I find it?
