Man, with Michael Jackson's death, I've never seen my NPR music gadget updated so frequently!

I don't think my body is able to handle heat very well. Its seems that near or above 100 degrees I can start feeling sick. It's been very hot in Bloomington lately, and I felt very nauseous today. I tried to drink as much as I could, but earlier in the day I could barely get any liquids down without extreme discomfort. I kept forcing myself to drink, and eventually, when I was able to drink larger amounts, I started to feel better. It reminded me of one particularly hot day in DC last year, except that time it was over 110 degrees, I think. I'll take a nice, crisp 30 degree day over this heat.

Driver's Ed

I was looking at this driver's ed manual last night, and it reminded me of all the principles we learned that have subsequently proved irrelevant to my actual practice of driving for the past 9 years. For instance, there was that 5 step principle of risk assessment (named authoritatively after someone, like "Johnson" or something, as if it required any investment of intellectual labor). You were suppose to identify all hazards as you drove, evaluate the risks posed by each, decide on a course of action, and implement that decision, and then assess the effectiveness of your action. That's not for me. I use a one step process that I call instinct. I think it is more efficient than a process that requires three steps before you actually do anything. Another thing I never understood was railroad track protocol. When I had my driver's test, I was reprimanded because I did not stop and look both ways when I was on the track. But I figured, in the event that that whole warning system, with the bells and flashing lights and the giant bar that comes down, if it were to fail, and the train happened to be gliding silently along the track so that no one could hear it, and I had already made it onto the railroad tracks, I think at that point, stopping, and watching the train glide into my car would not help me. "Wow, there's a train heading right for my car! I'm so glad I stopped and looked out my window so that I can see it hit me! ...I mean, imagine if I hadn't, and was no longer on the tracks when the train passed..." Same thing with the yellow light at an intersection. Slow down? Are you kidding me? "Oh, the light's about to change! I should linger around in the intersection a while." If the light is about to turn red and other lanes of traffic are going to start moving in paths that intersect with mine, clearly, I want to hang around and obstruct it.

But the thing that really confounded me was "defensive driving." What kind of a slogan is that? What does it mean? I think it's a big misnomer. I mean, first of all, what would its opposite be? Is there really such a thing as offensive driving? "That woman looks like she might cut me off and thus put me in danger. I'll ram her off the road to prevent that from happening!!" Second, do we really want to describe good driving with a term which always implies some kind of antagonistic conflict with another person? "Defense" entails some direct, active response to the aggressive provocation of someone else. If someone threatens you and you back away or run off in another direction, thereby terminating the confrontation, no one is going to tell you, "Wow, you did a great job defending yourself!" Avoidance is not defense. But when you drive, the whole goal is avoidance! Furthermore, if you think about it in terms of sports, offense is actually preferable. Offense is working single-mindedly toward a goal. Defense has no goal, no aim, other than to thwart those of others. Is that really how you should drive? "She thinks she's going to make it to work on time? Not if I swerve in front of her and force her to hit me!!" In that sense, the only people who should drive defensively are the police when they are involved in a car chase. Intercepting the culprit's "breakaway" by laying down spikes and shooting out their tires. Now that's defensive driving! And I don't even think it's such a great idea when the police do it.

I can think of dozens of phrases that are better than "defensive driving." Safe driving. Cautious driving. Careful driving. Alert driving. Attentive driving. Who on earth would settle for defensive driving?
